The Truth About Exfoliation: Are You Doing It Right?

Exfoliation is one of the most essential steps in a skincare routine—it helps remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and reveal a brighter, smoother complexion. But with so many different products and techniques available, it’s easy to wonder: Am I exfoliating the right way?

At The Body Bar, we see a lot of confusion around exfoliation, from over-exfoliating to using the wrong products for certain skin types. Let’s break down the do’s and don’ts of exfoliation to ensure your skin stays healthy, radiant, and balanced.

Why Is Exfoliation So Important?

Our skin naturally sheds dead skin cells every 28 days, but as we age, this process slows down, leading to dullness, congestion, and uneven texture. Regular exfoliation helps:

Speed up cell turnover for fresher, younger-looking skinPrevent clogged pores and breakoutsBoost the effectiveness of skincare productsImprove skin tone and texture

But here’s the key: Exfoliation should be done the right way to avoid irritation or damage.

Are You Making These Exfoliation Mistakes?

🚫 Over-Exfoliating

More is not always better! Over-exfoliating can strip the skin’s natural barrier, leading to redness, dryness, sensitivity, and even breakouts. If your skin feels tight, irritated, or overly shiny, you might be exfoliating too much.

✔️ The fix: Limit exfoliation to 2-3 times per week, depending on your skin type.

🚫 Using the Wrong Type of Exfoliant

Not all exfoliants are created equal! There are two main types:

🔹 Physical Exfoliants (scrubs, brushes, dermaplaning)These remove dead skin cells manually. However, harsh scrubs with large, jagged particles can cause micro-tears in the skin, leading to irritation.

🔹 Chemical Exfoliants (AHAs, BHAs, enzymes)These dissolve dead skin cells without scrubbing. AHAs (like glycolic and lactic acid) are great for brightening and hydration, while BHAs (like salicylic acid) work well for acne-prone and oily skin.

✔️ The fix: Choose the right exfoliant for your skin type and concerns.

🚫 Skipping Sunscreen

Exfoliation makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, increasing the risk of sunburn and hyperpigmentation.

✔️ The fix: Always apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ after exfoliating to protect your skin.

🚫 Exfoliating Irritated or Broken-Out Skin

If your skin is red, inflamed, sunburned, or actively breaking out, exfoliating can make things worse.

✔️ The fix: Give your skin time to heal before exfoliating again, and opt for gentle enzyme-based exfoliants instead.

How to Exfoliate the Right Way for Your Skin Type

🔹 Sensitive Skin → Gentle enzyme or lactic acid exfoliation (1x per week)🔹 Oily/Acne-Prone Skin → Salicylic acid or light physical exfoliation (2-3x per week)🔹 Dry Skin → Lactic acid or hydrating enzyme exfoliation (1-2x per week)🔹 Combination Skin → Rotate between chemical and physical exfoliants (2x per week)
