Massage Therapy Myths: Separating Fact from Fiction

Massage therapy has been practiced for thousands of years, yet several common myths continue to circulate.

Let's separate fact from fiction.

Myth #1: "Massage Should Always Hurt"

Many people believe that a massage isn't effective unless it's painful.

In reality, more pressure isn't always better. Effective massage therapy should work with your body's tissues, not against them. While certain techniques may create temporary discomfort, communication with your therapist is essential to ensure pressure remains both safe and effective.

Myth #2: "Massage Flushes Toxins"

This is one of the most common misconceptions.

Massage therapy doesn't "flush toxins" out of your body. Instead, it helps improve circulation, supports healthy tissue mobility, and promotes relaxation. Staying hydrated after your massage supports your body's normal physiological processes, but the idea of toxins being released during massage isn't supported by current evidence.

Myth #3: "You Only Need a Massage When You're in Pain"

Massage therapy can certainly help relieve muscle tension, but many people also use it proactively to support recovery, reduce stress, improve mobility, and maintain overall wellness.

Consistent care often provides greater long-term benefits than waiting until discomfort becomes severe.

Myth #4: "Every Massage Is the Same"

Every person's body is different.

Factors like your health history, daily activities, stress levels, and personal goals all influence what type of massage and techniques may be most appropriate for you.

That's why personalized care matters.
